I have been based in the Old Building Yard, Wentworth for the past 30ish years and have built up a strong following of both art lovers and collectors alike. As a self-taught representational artist I tend to work at present with the traditional media of oil, watercolour, pen and ink, pencil and charcoal but I have also worked with clay, plaster of Paris, float glass (diamond scratched and stipple engraved), copper repousse and screen printing (both decorative and commercial). Subjects I paint Anything really, I love portraits and figures but struggle for sitters, landscapes, townscapes, seascapes, woodlands, meadows, machinery, animals, horses working in the woods and the fields, you name it, the list is endless. My aim when painting To paint atmosphere; to capture the warmth of a summer's breeze, the buzzing of bees in a meadow, the lapping of water on a canal bank, the rustle of leaves in the autumn woodland, the sound of the rain on a tin roof or crunch of frozen snow underfoot. Work in progress There are two on-going series of painting. The first, mainly using oil, features working agricultural machinery in the landscape today. The second was started at the beginning of 2010 and began almost by accident by the flick of a brush so to speak. These paintings consist mainly of large watercolours, the theme being imaginary landscapes. The first rule of these paintings is that there are no rules other than it just has to look right, in effect the artist acts as God, conjuring up a landscape and then creating the different types of flora and fauna that might grow in such an atmosphere, the beings that are able to live in it, the sort of clothes they might wear, the transport they use. The list of things you can do and the colours you can use is therefore endless. Use of photograph I have always been a keen photographer and this has been very useful in my work, especially now with the aid of digital cameras giving the ability to manipulate and create pictures in computer programs such as 'Elements'. Commissions I do undertake commissions and over the years these have varied enormously from portraits of both people and pets, gardens and houses, (some very grand and some very ordinary but likewise mean a great deal to their owners), all sorts of vehicles and factory machinery plus office work scenes as well as the usual landscapes. I have also produced individual cartoons for customers' memorable occasions; one of my favourite commissions in this genre was illustrating a book called 'Bertie the Colonels Flag' by the author Ian Milnes. Exhibitions My paintings have been entered and featured in numerous exhibitions and competitions in and around the North of England and now adorn the walls of homes, offices and boardrooms all over the world. |
